understanding terms
Mesh - a wire frame used to build an item.
Texture - a flat image that stretches itself around an items mesh (wire frame) to make it look real.
Template - an image (sometimes a psd. image which means you can save it and open it as layers) that a developer provides you with as a
guide to their item so that you can more easily derive from them. Sort of like a map to their item.
how they come together
A developer (usually a pro) will make an item using a mesh (the 3d wire frame). The developer will then use a texture to wrap around the mesh to make their item look realistic. Once this developer has achieved the look they are after, they might choose to submit their item as derivable. An item set to derivable means that the developer is allowing you to use their mesh to submit your own textures. It is for this reason that re-texturing developers state that they do not have control over a mesh because they derived and the mesh is not there own.
Some meshes might not be layerable. In this event an item might bump off another item.
