well, if you're trying to survive only by playing gigs, it is extremely difficult. About 95 percent of all pro jazz players have a sidejob to pay the bills. That can be teaching, but also working at an office for example. One thing that can pay all the bills though is to join an orchestra, which is something i'm trying to do right now. The main problem with trying to survive by only playing gigs is that there is absolutely no way to make a financial planning on the long term. One month you make good money, the other you earn nothing at all. So it is possible to make a living by only playing gigs , but you have to be aware of the fact that you're never are going to be rich, unless you're one of the lucky ones, that means one out of millions, that have a good concept, and end up rich, like Micheal Jackson for instance.
