They will run fine as installed if you have no clue but there is some configuration that can be done within each program. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition I find it doesn't slow down my computer as much as Norton and it's free for home users. If you already have an Anti-Virus program installed, you do not need this.

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. Spybot also can clean program and Web-usage tracks from your system, which is especially useful if you share your computer.
