Hey there, sorry about that confusion on the chat thing. I guess you are a little new to the site as well as the program.
To chat with someone, all you do is just type, no message screen, no clicking anywhere to type something, just type and the words will appear. As long as the 3D view screen is your main screen, anything you type will be posted. So all you do is type and press ENTER to send your message, it's that simple. :D
