UMD (Universal Media Disc) Cool Sony's entering the portable gaming market. The PSP must be a smash hit, right? Its media format, the UMD is a proprietary 1.8 GB disc that is also something of an ugly duckling. Sony primarily uses it for games on the PSP, but it was also being touted as a "DVD killer." But with less features than DVD at a more expensive price, and no device that can play them on a TV, UMD was destined to fail from the start. Too bad.
