Also, I talked to Matt, and he has already added some of the looping/ambient functionality you wanted. Not 100% of it though. Apparently the code already supported this, but there was no UI to access it in the previewer.
In 3d graphics, a billboard is something which is drawn so that it always faces the viewer. You can make very realistic looking clouds by billboarding alpha shaded textures, and you can even animate them and have them look good.
The only problem with billboarding is that if you circle your view around the object, you can tell that it's not the same as other objects.
I submitted a feature request to our issue tracker. It will probably be assigned to me. So, at some point, I will be implementing it, but I don't know when.

Maybe you could billboard a couple of alpha-d cloudy textures, for the cloud, and animate their motion, so it looked "real"? (Is it easy to billboard stuff? I am in charge of the previewer but I don't really use it, Matt's the artist)
The Raincloud is just too funny! Yes, looping ambient sound would be great. Now if it hasn't been done yet, a hovering UFO that is perpetually "beaming you up" would be a nice compliment product. ;)
